Changes in the environment are subtle, but they are many.
In my lifetime spent living and working here in the Wye Valley I have born witness to many environmental changes.
I view the Valley which is an AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Interest) as a precious sliver of land renowned for its natural beauty. I adore being here and immersed intimately in it, choosing to spend most of my time outdoors.

The Lower Wye Valley is classed as a temperate or Celtic rain forest with an abundance of ferns, lichens and mosses creating a beautiful green ocean.

Yet to my mind these forests are as much under threat as the big rain forests that garner all the news.

Here I talk more about my environmental concerns.

The good news is that we are an intelligent species, with all the technological answers to hand.
We have the potential for a bright, clean future, but the time is running out.
I pray that each and every one of us has the wisdom to make essential changes.

This piece was carved from one such casualty. A fallen Beech down in our wood that took my father and I a hair-raising morning bringing the wonderful curving branches safely down to the ground.
Beech wood is a delight, its hard composition once favoured for furniture making because it holds a lovely edge when carving. It is not as hard as oak so as to not blunt all the tools.
Here I really enjoyed choosing this fabulous curved pieces, finding the balance point, deciding how to shape and then carving my signature designs into them.
